Installing, managing, and removing software

Installing software from a remote machine (pkginstall)

To install software from an install server, you can use the Application Installer. A command-line alternative is to use the pkginstall(1M) command as described here.

In this example, the administrator of systema wants to install all the packages that are on a cartridge tape at another site. An administrator at the other site has agreed to insert the media containing the package into systemb (which is also on the network) so that the software can be installed on systema.

NOTE: For this example, systemb must be configured as an install server and network installation must be enabled. For details, see ``Setting up and administering an install server''.

  1. The systemb administrator inserts the cartridge tape into systemb's cartridge tape drive.

  2. The systema administrator logs in to systema as root.

  3. The systema administrator enters:

    pkginstall -s systemb:/dev/rmt/ctape1 all
