Configuring the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)

Configuring a link device

A link device is a physical device such as a modem, a synchronous or an asynchronous ISDN channel, or a directly-connected serial line. The link devices that are defined for a bundle control which devices it can use to establish an outgoing or incoming PPP link.

NOTE: You must have already configured the communications devices that you want to use as link devices with PPP. Suitable devices are modems, ISDN terminal adapters, and dedicated serial lines. See ``Adding and configuring modems'', ``Adding ISDN devices'', and ``The Serial Manager'' for more information on how to configure your system for such devices.

To modify the settings for a link device:

  1. In the PPP Manager, select View -> Link devices to view the currently defined link devices.

  2. To change an existing link device definition, select the link device from those listed, and then select Edit -> Modify.

  3. You can change the following information about the link device:

    Enabled
Whether the device can be used by bundles. Set to No to prevent PPP using the device.

    Flow control
The type of flow control that will be used with a link device:

    None
    Do not use flow control.

    Hardware
Use RTS and CTS handshake lines to perform flow control.

    Software
Use XON and XOFF characters to perform flow control.

NOTE: Flow control settings are not shown for synchronous ISDN channels as they have no meaning for such devices.

    Telephone number extension
The digits of the telephone number that identify this device. These are appended to the common prefix that is defined in the global bundle.

  4. Click on the button corresponding to the advanced options that you want to define or change for the link device:

  5. Click on OK when you have finished configuring the link device.

NOTE: The PPP Manager displays each B channel of an ISDN terminal adapter as a separate link device.
