Printing

Two print subsystems are available: the traditional System V LP Subsystem (LP) and the Common UNIX Print Subsystem (CUPS). The documentation for the currently enabled print subsystem appears in the Printing topic's table of contents.

The chprnsys(1M) command is used to display and change the currently selected printing subsystem (and documentation). This command reconfigures DocView and the man(1) command to display the guides and manual pages appropriate for the currently selected print subsystem.

If CUPS is the currently selected print subsystem, all the documentation available with the CUPS distribution is provided under the Common UNIX Print Subsystem (CUPS) link, including a Whitepaper, User's Guide, Administrator's Guide, and Programmer's Guide.

If LP is the currently selected print subsystem, the following documentation is provided:

  • Managing the print service

Describes how to use the Printer Setup Manager to add, modify, or delete local or network printers, enable/disable and accept/reject printers and print jobs, control access to printers, and perform many other printing tasks.

  • Managing print jobs

Explains how to use the Print Job Manager to view, delete, hold, resume, transfer, and re-schedule print jobs on your system.

  • Advanced printer configuration

Details customized printer configurations, including page size, banners, and interface scripts; print filters, and PostScript issues.
