Outgoing PPP over a modem

The bundle is configured to use the IP network protocol. The IP protocol settings associated with the bundle define IP address negotiation, packet filtering and routing, VJ header compression, and whether any DNS name servers that the remote access server advertizes should be used.

The single link device is configured to use the Link Control Protocol (LCP) which controls asynchronous control character mapping, magic number negotiation, and link quality determination.

The remote access server may use one or more of the following methods to authenticate the incoming user before it will set up the PPP link:

• the incoming user must execute a chat script that specifies a valid user name and password to log in (some servers may also require that the user execute a command such as ppp to start PPP)

• the incoming user's telephone number (their caller ID) must match that expected by the server

• the incoming user must use the Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) to supply a valid name and password

• the incoming user must use the Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) to prove that they know the secret that the server associates with their name
